Local crops are suffering from rain, lack of sun

wheatCrops in Wellington County may look promising in the field, but experts say corn, soybeans and wheat are all struggling, overly wet and heat deprived.

It will have to get hot and dry soon to avoid significant yield loss.

Root rot and fusarium, a plant fungus, are threatening to take hold, says Todd Austin, a wheat marketing expert with the Grain Farmers of Ontario. Crops are uneven.

“We are seeing uneven emergence and that is leading to uneven development of crops,” Austin said, adding that some fields have empty spots in them because of the accumulation of water from too much rain. “We’ve got more than enough moisture now. We really could use some heat — some nice warm weather, especially for the beans and corn.” …
