Saving the Monarchs

Dear Editor:

It was with great interest that I read the article posted on the Welland Tribune. The article introduces us to a lady who has taken on the mission of having the Town of Port Colborne delay the cutting grasses along the rural roads until the end of October. This simple act of waiting, will allow the milkweed to continue to thrive along the roadsides until the frost hits. This allows plenty of time for the Monarch Butterfly to lay it’s eggs on the milkweed and then allows the caterpillars time to eat, grow and eventually turn into Monarchs without the danger of losing their habitat.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the Township of Puslinch and the County of Wellington followed suit and allowed the milkweed to thrive and grow until October. This would give the Monarchs the fighting chance they need to survive and make a comeback.

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter,

  1. I think that is a great idea! We just moved to the area and I was excited to find milkweed growing on our property. I am looking forward to spreading those seeds all over!
