Every Friday at 4 o’clock here in Puslinch the door opens and closes several times at Joan’s house. These visitors are coming to learn about what it means to be a 4H member. There is always an ongoing theme which this time happens to be making and baking different types of cookies. The expectation of following the 16 kitchen safety rules for cooking starts by putting on a green smock and then washing thoroughly his/her hands. At this point, there are 7 members munching their way through the recipes.

Marion (27 years for 4H) continues to be one of the leaders because as she stated “I really enjoy working and being with kids. I love the enthusiasm that they bring with them to want to learn and do.”

Joan (53 years for 4H) enjoys mentoring the youth of today to help them continue to be good citizens. She expressed, “ I have great faith in the youth of today. Everyone is so busy now with working, this allows me to share everyday cooking skills for greater independence.”

Mixing of the age groups is common in 4h. This allows for leadership skills to be nurtured and developed.
Katherine, Nathan, Calla and Sarah take turns stirring the delicious chocolate gooeiness. All the children commented on how they enjoyed socializing with each other and of course eating the treats.

Philip enjoys spending quality time with grandma but also at the same time lending his skills to help younger children. He is keeping a watchful eye on Abbey as she pores in the sugar for the refrigerator cookies that will be cooked next week.

After Thandu, stirred and melted the marshmallows he thought it would be a good idea to share the leftover bounty with his brother. I pretty sure Jabula enjoyed helping with that small project.

At the end of clean up, (Thanks to the associate 4H leader Lisa, shown in this picture) the group does role call. The topic was “your favourite cookie”. Nathan was the president for this meeting (this job always rotates) and Katherine was the secretary (also rotates). The 4H pledge was taken which signals the end of the time together.

If your child (children) (9 and older) are interested in trying this activity on a Friday (not PD days) from 4 – 5:30, please call Marion at 519-822-6219.
