Union Market Square “softly” opened mid-May, sending out tender shoots, and is now about to blossom into a full-fledged market and bistro at the corner in Arkell.

“It’s been a long time, but it’s been well worth the wait,” said owner Stephen Goyda, at one of the tables in his bistro. Renovations are finished inside, the grounds are landscaped and everything is up to code, he said. It’s been about two years in the works.

Originally the name was to be the Dirty Apron, but Union Market Square is “more grand and friendly” he said, in keeping with his vision of a place where the community can come together in a “fun, relaxing environment.”

Located across from Arkell United Church, the two-story building is hard to miss on the southwest corner of Watson and Arkell Road, with its covered porch and flags flying. Inside, it’s an open concept, with the market on the left and bistro, with seating for about 18, on the right.

“It’s a very open kitchen, so you can see us preparing all the food,” Goyda said. “It’s like a local market slash butcher shop, with a small little restaurant attached.”

  1. Having just recently moved to the area, I have quickly made it a routine to drop by the Union Market Square for steaks, chops, or sausages for the bbq. Just love the bacon too. The scooped ice cream is for both the young and the not so young. A nice treat for all to enjoy. Wishes of continuing success to Stephen and Jessica on their market and bistro!

Be sure to visit the……. Union Market Square.
