Eat Well and Help Children at this Week’s Market Fundraiser

This weekend the Aberfoyle Farmers Market is hosting their 3rd Annual Peaches and Ice Cream Fundraiser for Sunrise Therapeutic Riding Centre. With every donation you can enjoy a heavenly bowl of Warner Orchards peaches with Kawartha Dairy vanilla ice cream.

Sunrise is a very important member of our community and provides accessible equestrian based experiences for people of all abilities. I can attest to that. My Grandkids count the days to riding camp every year. At the end of the session the lessons they go home with are immeasurable, but most important is their increased respect for all beings, abled and disabled. Sunrise’s mission is: “To develop the full potential of children and adults with disabilities and lead them closer to independence through a therapy, recreation, horse riding, life skills and farm related activity program.” Help Sunrise help children and adults alike by making a peach of a donation at the market this weekend. Can’t get to the market? You can MAKE A DONATION HERE

A big shout out to the farm that is helping to make this worthwhile event happen this weekend. Warner Orchards are donating the peaches for this week’s fundraiser and are pulling out all the stops to have them ripened to perfection for Saturday. After you have your peaches and cream stock up with their bounty of freestone peaches available this week, as well as different varieties of plums and nectarines.

Warner Orchards is a family farm and they grow everything they sell at the market. On Saturdays, there are always family members present and will try to answer any question related to the growing or marketing of their fruit. They take pride in the produce that they grow with expert attention. From experience I know that they do their very best to supply a product that not only will they be happy with, but you will too.

So hail the mighty peach! I think the arrival of peach season deserves a mighty recipe. I am a member of a Foodie Group on Facebook called the Cook’s Cook Community Forum and this week I asked for the group to post their favourite peach recipes. There were a lot of peach pie and peach crumble suggestions, and then one savvy cook said why not both? So here’s a recipe for Brown Sugar Peach Crumble Pie from Sally’s Baking Addiction. A blog with that title must mean that Sally means business when it comes to the baked goods!

Fittingly this weekend if you have ever thought about becoming a foster parent, Saturday would be a great day to get more information. Satori Foster Homes will be at the market answering questions about the process and about fostering with a private agency. They are currently looking for part time and full time foster families to join their team. Please take a few minutes to stop by their booth

Vandenbroek Farm will be there this week as always with plenty of their beautiful vegetables. Their corn is still amazing and going strong and they will have loads of broccoli. I am told they are offering savings on larger quantities of potatoes and tomatoes so why not buy a big batch of tomatoes and slow roast them in the oven with olive oil and seasoned with salt and pepper? That way you can enjoy the freshness all winter long anytime you need tomatoes for a sauce or recipe.

The Aberfoyle Farmers’ Market is alive and well and open for business. If you live in South Guelph this is the closest local farmers market to you and there is plenty of free parking and fresh air!

Come support this local market at the Aberfoyle Farmers’ Market, at the Optimist Recreation Centre’s outdoor pad, 23 Brock Road S in Aberfoyle, next to the Puslinch Community Centre. Saturday, August 26 from 8am to 1pm.
