Local Residents Create Survey Regarding Street Name Change

I am a resident of Swastika Trail in Puslinch Township, and I am writing on behalf of approximately half of the residents of the street who are encouraging Puslinch Council to change the name of our street.

Although the Sanskrit word ‘su-asti’ represents a historic symbol associated with good fortune, the more recent English word ‘swastika’ represents a symbol that continues to be associated with bigotry, anti-Semitism and intolerance.

As recently as last week, Nazi symbols appeared on walls of the campus of UBC. This morning’s news of the death of Charles Manson includes a recent photo of him with a swastika on his forehead. There are those who would ‘reclaim’ the swastika; clearly this is wishful thinking. Since the swastika continues to shock and offend most people, it’s time for Council to stand up for what’s right and change the name of Swastika Trail.

I would like to encourage readers of this paper to express their views by calling Puslinch Council (519-763-1226) and by responding to a short, three question survey by clicking on this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/swastikatrail
