County Offering Leaf And Yard Waste Interim Collection

Wellington County

The County of Wellington has implemented proactive measures to limit the
spread of the COVID-19 virus. As a result, all County Waste Facilities are closed to the public until further notice.

At this time of year, many County residents typically use the waste facilities to dispose of leaf and yard waste. While the County’s waste facilities remain closed, residents have limited options to dispose of this material.

Today, the Solid Waste Services Committee approved an interim measure to facilitate curbside collection of leaf and yard waste in 56 designated urban areas (those that currently receive weekly curbside collection services), with the collected material being disposed of at a composting facility in Arthur. While the County has contracted seasonal leaf and yard waste collection for the designated areas, that programme does not start until Fall 2020. The interim leaf and yard waste collection will be provided by County staff in partnership with Wellington County’s member municipalities.

“Council and staff have heard from concerned residents regarding the disposal of leaf and yard waste,” said Warden Kelly Linton. “I am very pleased to announce that through the joint efforts of the County and our member municipalities, we are able to provide this interim collection solution.”

“With our waste facilities temporarily closed, it is important to come up with a solution to address the concerns of the public,” commented Gregg Davidson, Solid Waste Services Chair. “We appreciate everyone’s patience as we continue to adapt and strive to provide the best services we can while protecting our residents and staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Collection will begin the week of April 27 and run for six weeks. Each municipality will have two separate
collection weeks. Details will be promoted through local media and will be available on the County’s website at www.wellington.ca/yardwaste.

Residents in rural areas are asked to store or compost leaf and yard waste on their property until waste facilities have been are re-opened.
